From Underused Space to High-Performance Training Hub: A Functional Fitness Room That Maximizes Indoor Gym Space

For many indoor gyms, athletic clubs, and parks and recreation facilities, there’s a common challenge hiding in plain sight: outdated cardio rooms and underutilized group fitness spaces that no longer match the way people want to train today. That was exactly the opportunity presented at Decatur Indoor Sports, where an aging fitness room was transformed into a modern functional fitness and strength training environment designed for both personal and group training.

Before:
Outdated Layout, Limited Training Functionality, Underutilized Equipment

Working alongside the facility team, MoveStrong helped reimagine the space with a layout focused on versatility, flow, and member engagement. Rather than filling the room with rows of single-purpose equipment, the goal was to create a training environment that could support multiple users, different training styles, and scalable programming throughout the day.

The finished design centers around our custom Nova FTS system, strategically positioned to anchor the room while still allowing open movement space around the perimeter. This layout creates natural training zones that can accommodate strength circuits, HIIT classes, obstacle-based conditioning, mobility work, and personal training sessions all within the same footprint.

One of the biggest advantages of the redesign was improving how the room functions during peak usage. Instead of members waiting on machines or being limited to one style of exercise, the updated layout encourages movement-based training and multi-user participation. Trainers can easily run small group sessions while individual members still have space to perform their own workouts.

The design also balances structure with flexibility. Features like monkey bars, climbing ropes, globe grips, extended pull-up stations, and kickbag training areas add dynamic training opportunities without overwhelming the room. By integrating multiple training options into a single system, the facility was able to maximize usable square footage while maintaining an open and inviting atmosphere.

Designing Spaces That Keep Members Moving

For parks and recreation centers in particular, this style of layout offers long-term programming flexibility. Functional fitness spaces can adapt to a wide range of users including youth sports performance programs, adult strength training, boot camps, obstacle course conditioning, and community wellness classes. Instead of dedicating valuable indoor space to equipment with limited use cases, facilities can create environments that evolve with member interests and workout trends.

Another major benefit of the redesign is the visual energy it brings to the facility. Functional training spaces naturally create more interaction, movement, and community engagement.

Members can see activity happening throughout the room, which helps generate excitement and encourages participation. For facilities looking to modernize their offerings and attract new members, the training environment itself becomes part of the experience.

Projects like the transformation at Decatur Indoor Sports show how thoughtful layout and equipment design can completely redefine underused indoor space. By focusing on flexibility, training flow, and multi-user functionality, gyms and recreation centers can create high-performance environments that better support the way people train today while maximizing the value of every square foot.
