Gunny’s Junior Gym: A Functional Fitness Training Space for the Next Generation
Designing a training space that inspires movement, challenge, and confidence requires more than simply filling a room with equipment. For the team at Gunny’s Jr’s Gym, the goal was clear from the beginning: create an indoor functional fitness and obstacle training facility where kids could rediscover the joy of movement while adults could train in a dynamic and purposeful environment. To support that vision, MoveStrong partnered closely with the team behind the project to guide the full layout design process, shaping a space that blends obstacle-style training, functional strength work, and open movement areas into one cohesive environment.
Designing a Space Around Movement
Every effective training facility begins with a thoughtful layout. Rather than designing around individual pieces of equipment, the process started with a simple question: how should people move through the space?
For Gunny’s Jr’s Gym, the priority was creating an environment that encourages exploration, progression, and constant engagement. Young athletes need the freedom to climb, balance, jump, and test their abilities in ways that feel like play, while still building meaningful physical skills. At the same time, the gym needed to accommodate adult functional fitness classes and structured training sessions.
The solution was a layout that blends open training zones with dynamic obstacle structures, allowing coaches to run classes, design courses, and keep athletes moving without congestion or downtime.
featured obstacles and functional fitness stations
At the center of the facility sits a familiar MoveStrong design: The MoveStrong Staircase and Ramp structure with cargo net. Custom design just for the space with the training and storage needs to accommodate all user abilities and training accessories to be neatly organized.
This structure provides a versatile hub for climbing, crawling, and functional strength training. The staircase and ramp create natural opportunities for step work, incline training, and conditioning circuits, while the cargo net introduces an engaging climbing challenge that builds grip strength, coordination, and full-body control. Because of its versatility, the structure works equally well for youth obstacle challenges and adult conditioning sessions, making it a perfect anchor for a mixed-use facility.
Additional MoveStrong features expand the training environment and create countless movement pathways throughout the gym.
Geo floor obstacles add a ground-based element to the facility, encouraging athletes to develop balance, coordination, and spatial awareness. These obstacles support a wide range of drills focused on stability, agility, and movement control.
A dual side-by-side Nova XL functional training station forms another major centerpiece of the gym. Fully equipped with the latest Ninja Warrior–style and obstacle course training features, the station allows athletes to practice hanging movements, upper-body strength challenges, and obstacle transitions. Having two stations side-by-side also allows multiple athletes to train simultaneously, which is especially valuable during youth classes or group sessions.
Another standout feature of the space is the dual-height warped wall. A staple in obstacle training, the varying wall heights allow beginners and more advanced athletes to progress at their own pace. Younger participants can build confidence on the lower wall while experienced athletes push themselves on the taller version.
To support speed, agility, and conditioning work, the facility also includes a dedicated turf area. This space gives coaches the flexibility to run sprint drills, sled pushes, and dynamic warm-ups that keep athletes moving and engaged.
Finally, a series of varied-height wall obstacles introduces additional climbing and vaulting challenges throughout the facility, encouraging athletes to test their strength, coordination, and problem-solving skills.
A Partnership Built Around Youth Movement
Gunny’s Jr’s Gym has been recognized as a MoveStrong partnership site, reflecting a shared commitment to helping youth rediscover movement and build confidence through physical challenges.
The partnership goes beyond equipment installation. Throughout the planning process, MoveStrong worked closely with the gym’s leadership to develop a layout that supports a diverse range of programming, from youth obstacle training to functional fitness classes designed for adults. This collaborative approach ensures that every element of the space serves a purpose and contributes to the larger mission of the facility.
A Mission That Goes Beyond Fitness
At the heart of the project is a powerful mission: helping kids build strength, confidence, and resilience through movement.
Gunny’s Jr’s Gym was created as a place where children can climb, jump, run, and challenge themselves in an environment designed specifically for their development. The programs are meant for every child, from young athletes looking to improve performance to kids who simply need a place to move, build confidence, and develop a healthier relationship with physical activity. In a time when many kids spend more hours sitting than moving, spaces like this offer something increasingly valuable: a chance to reconnect with what their bodies are capable of. Through structured training, obstacle challenges, and supportive coaching, the goal is to help kids grow stronger physically, mentally, and emotionally, while having an incredible amount of fun along the way.
Looking Ahead
With the layout design finalized and installation underway, Gunny’s Jr’s Gym is preparing to open the doors to a one-of-a-kind training environment built around movement, challenge, and community.
More details about the grand opening will be announced soon, but one thing is already clear: this facility is built to inspire the next generation to climb higher, move better, and discover just how strong they can be.
